In the context of growing environmental concerns, the project Slow Furniture aims to address the significant problem of furniture waste. Each year, the European Union generates around 10 million tons of furniture waste, with a staggering 90% ending up in landfills or being incinerated. This project explores a sustainable solution by designing multifunctional, long-lasting, and emotionally engaging furniture that adapts to the changing needs of users over time.

THE PROBLEM

The rapid production and disposal cycle of modern furniture, often referred to as "fast furniture," is driven by the low cost and poor quality of materials. This results in short-lived products that are quickly discarded. A significant portion of this waste comes from children's furniture, which is outgrown rapidly. Surveys indicate that 47.1% of people replace furniture because their needs change, and 41.2% do so because the furniture breaks. This cycle of use and disposal contributes to environmental degradation and the depletion of resources.

"THE SOLUTION"

Slow Furniture proposes a different approach to most of the products in the market by creating evolutionary furniture that grows and changes with the user. By focusing on the principles of the circular economy, this project designs furniture that can transform its function as the user's needs evolve. For example, a crib that can be converted into a desk as the child grows. This approach not only extends the life cycle of the product but also fosters an emotional connection between the user and the furniture, encouraging them to keep and adapt the item rather than dispose of it.

One of the key aspects of this project is the creation of an emotional bond between the furniture and its users. Emotional design enhances the longevity of products by making them more meaningful and valuable to the user. When users develop a personal connection with their furniture, they are more likely to maintain and repurpose it.

The technical development of Slow Furniture involved extensive research and analysis. The project started with an investigation of existing market solutions and user behavior through surveys and interviews. The design process include creating a detailed 3D model, analyzing stress and displacement, and optimizing pieces for am minimum use of material.

RECOGNITION

Slow Furniture has been recognized for its innovative approach and contribution to sustainable design. The project was awarded the Bronze Award by UNESCO at the Future Designer International Innovation Design Awards, highlighting its potential to inspire future innovations in sustainable product design.
